The basis for a very successful AC installation starts in the engineering phase of the project. Our designers establish the total air conditioning load for the entire structure and the individual rooms in the building. We run a complete set of ACCA Manual J load calculations, so the capacity of the equipment will precisely match the cooling requirements of your home or office.

Manual J incorporates a number of important energy consumption metrics into the load computations including:

• Total size of the building
• Regional temperature and humidity history
• Insulation R-values for ceiling and wall assemblies
• Perimeter tightness
• Thermal conductivity of windows and doors
• Duct leakage
• Building orientation

Some HVAC contractors continue to use discredited methods, including the “square feet per ton” formula, when sizing equipment. The efficiency characteristics of different buildings can vary substantially, and inaccurate sizing estimates can distort the tonnage requirements for the AC system.

An over-sized air conditioning installation may short cycle, which will increase operating expenses and degrade indoor comfort. This is most commonly manifested in uneven temperatures, poor air movement, and excessive humidity. Systems that are undersized may not have sufficient capacity to meet the thermostat call in extreme weather. The unit may run constantly, and the excessive accumulated wear can cause repeated malfunctions and premature equipment failure. Contractors that do not use Manual J in the sizing process should always be avoided.
